What’s Cooking at The Outpost

There's a difference between eating and eating somewhere. You can grab a burger anywhere. But grab one on our patio with the sun dropping over Cheney Lake, the smell of the grill drifting past the dock, and a cold drink sweating on the table. That's a different meal entirely.

We get asked all the time: "What's actually good here?" So we thought it was time to answer that properly.

The Food Has to Earn Its Place on the Lake

Cheney Lake pulls in boaters, bikers off the prairie trail, families finishing a day at the water, and the regulars who just come for the music on weekends. That's a wide mix of people walking through our doors, and it means the menu can't just be "fine." It has to be the kind of food people talk about on the drive home.

That's the standard we hold ourselves to. Every dish on the menu has survived the same test: would we order it again after a full day outside, tired, hungry, and not in the mood for anything mediocre?

The Dishes People Keep Coming Back For

A few items have quietly become the ones regulars order without even looking at the menu — you'll spot them on our menu with a little star next to the name, which is our way of flagging the dishes we're proudest of:

The Outpost Burger — A juicy ⅓ lb beef patty with American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, and pickles, all on a soft toasted bun. Simple on paper, but the kind of burger that gets people asking what we do differently. Add bacon or an extra patty if you're feeling ambitious, or swap in Swiss or Pepper Jack.

Smoked Sirloin Sandy — Slow-smoked sliced sirloin, caramelized onions, and melted provolone piled on a soft bun. Smoky, hearty, and the sandwich that convinced a lot of first-timers to become regulars.

BBQ Burnt Ends on Toast — Rich beef brisket burnt ends served over two slices of Texas toast with BBQ sauce, plus a side of mac n' cheese. It's a local favorite for a reason. This is comfort food built for a day that started on the water and ended at the bar.

If you haven't tried one of these yet, consider this your sign.

Why We Keep the Menu Small

We could stretch the menu across four pages and call it variety. We don't, on purpose. A smaller menu means every dish gets attention instead of getting lost. It means the kitchen can focus on doing a handful of things exceptionally well instead of a hundred things adequately.

It also means when something new does show up on the menu, it's because it's genuinely earned its spot, not because we needed to fill space.

What's New This Season

We've been testing a few additions based on requests we kept hearing at the bar and out on the patio:

  • A lighter grilled chicken option for the folks who've been out on bikes all day and want something that won't slow them down on the ride back

  • A seasonal side rotation, so regulars have a reason to come back even for the "usual" order

  • A revamped kids' menu, because apparently chicken tenders are a universal language

Something for Our Plant-Based Friends Too

Good food shouldn't come with an asterisk for the folks at the table who eat differently. So we've added a couple of options that don't skimp on flavor, even though there's no meat involved.

The Veggie Burger is a hearty plant-based patty grilled to perfection, topped with guacamole, fresh lettuce, ripe tomato, and crisp onions on a toasted bun. Built to satisfy the same way our beef burger does. And our Vegan Bruschetta takes toasted bread and piles it high with a vibrant mix of veggies and olive oil, entirely plant-based, no substitutions needed.

Whether you're vegan, vegetarian, or just splitting a table with someone who is, we wanted to make sure nobody's stuck picking around the edges of a side salad.

Food Made for This Place

At the end of the day, the menu isn't trying to be a destination on its own. It's built to fit here, a lakeside stop where people are coming off a boat, off a trail, or off a long week, and just want something good, made simply, and served without pretense.

So next time you're in, skip the scroll through your phone deciding what to order. Look for the star on the menu, or just ask your server what they're having. Chances are, it's one of the three dishes above, and chances are, they'll be right.
